North Queensland’s newest playmaker is about to take the biggest step of his career, with Liam Sutton set to become Cowboy No.332 when he makes his NRL debut at Magic Round. The 23‑year‑old has been named at five‑eighth for Saturday’s sold‑out clash with the Sydney Roosters at Suncorp Stadium, replacing injured co‑captain Tom Dearden.

A Newcastle Knights junior, Sutton arrived in Townsville ahead of the 2026 season on a two‑year deal after a standout Queensland Cup campaign with Wynnum Manly, earning praise from coaching staff and even securing a spot on the club’s preseason trip to Las Vegas. Coach Todd Payten says the debut is the reward for a young player who’s worked through setbacks and shown genuine resilience.

Sutton will partner Jake Clifford in the halves, with Clifford also marking a major milestone — his 100th NRL appearance. It’s a big night for the Cowboys pack too, with Griffin Neame set to run out for his 100th game for North Queensland, becoming just the 36th player in club history to reach the mark.
