The North Queensland Cowboys have secured long‑term stability, re‑signing Head Coach Todd Payten on a two‑year extension that keeps him at the club until the end of 2028.
Now in his sixth season, Payten is on track to become the longest‑serving coach in Cowboys history, surpassing Paul Green’s 168‑game record. Chairman David Myles says the decision reflects the club’s confidence in Payten’s leadership, culture‑building and long‑term direction — not just the ladder.
Payten says North Queensland “feels like home” and believes the squad’s depth and pathways put the club in a strong position for the future.
But the announcement came ahead of a tough night in Christchurch, where the Cowboys fell 38–20 to the Warriors — their third straight loss. A late contentious call swung momentum, leaving Payten frustrated post‑match.
Despite the setback, the Cowboys remain within striking distance of the top eight, and with Payten locked in through 2028, the club is backing stability to drive their next chapter.
