Ay Caramba!
Picture this, it’s December 17th, 1989, you’re looking for something to watch on TV and your channel surfing. You find the very first episode of a new animated show where the characters are yellow, but it’s funny so you sit down and watch the antics of this whacky family. Could you imagine back then that this exact same show would still be running 36 years later.
The Simpsons shaped US sitcoms and animated comedy’s in way that is still to this day being analysed and rewatched. Hell, just I rewatched seasons 4-13 myself earlier this year. Many of you may be surprised to learn that The Simpsons TV show is still on the air to this day and they have some unexpected news. Remember the original Simpsons Movie back in 2007? You know, the one with Spider-Pig and the giant dome? Well 20 years after that film a new Simpsons movie will be releasing. In a post to social media today it was revealed a new film is in the works.
Yep, after 37 seasons, the show is coming back for another film. Creator of the show Matt Groening recently revealed:
“I honestly thought 36 (seasons) was where we were going to end it,… no end in sight. We’re going to keep going. We’re going to go until somebody dies.”
The original cast of the core family have all remained unchanged since the shows conception. Harry Shearer who voices Homer, Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, and Mr Smithers is now 81. Julie Kavner, the voice of Marge is 75. Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart, Nelson, and Ralph Wiggum is now 67. Yeardley Smith who voices Lisa Simpsons is 61.
The show itself over the years has had many characters leave the show for various reasons. Pamela Hayden who voices Milhouse and many other characters left the show at the age of 70 to pursue other work. Marcia Wallace who voiced Edna Krabappel passed away. Even current cast member Hank Azaria who voices many characters has permanently stepped back from voicing Apu due to it feeling inappropriate to do these days.
The Simpsons movie 2 has not yet had any details revealed in what the movie will be about or if this potentially may be serving as the swan song for a show that has been on air for nearly 4 decades.
You can catch The Simpsons Movie 2 when it releases in theatres on the 23rd of July in 2027.
