Man wins $80m Powerball after 'rough trot'

A recently retired NSW man's fortune has turned after waking up to find himself $80 million richer.

The man from the Port Macquarie region took out Thursday night's $80 million Powerball jackpot in the third biggest individual windfall in Australian lottery history.

But when his head hit the pillow, the retiree was completely unaware he had the golden ticket until checking his email on Friday morning.

The man, who bought his ticket online and wished to remain anonymous, was overwhelmed by the news after recently battling hardship during last season's unprecedented bushfires.

"This is huge for my family," he said.

"We've been through a rough trot. We've been battling the drought for years and were affected by the bushfires earlier this year.

"This is just going to make my family's life so much easier."

He planned to spend part of his prize upgrading to a satellite TV to keep entertained amid coronavirus self-isolation.

Not that he's too bothered being on his own.

"Actually, I've been socially isolating since I retired so I'm pretty good at it," the man said.

Thursday night's winning numbers were 14, 21, 16, 12, 1, 29 and 27, with 7 the Powerball.
