UPDATE 11.45AM: POLICE TREATING WOMAN’S DEATH AS SUSPICIOUS
The death of a 47-year-old woman in a house fire at Ayr is being treated as suspicious, police say.
The woman, along with a 65-year-old man, were taken to Ayr Hospital in a critical condition, before being flown to Townsville University Hospital.
Sadly, the woman later died from her injuries.
The 65-year-old man has since been airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Police say investigators have been unable to speak to him at this stage, as he is receiving medical treatment.
A man in his 20s was also taken to Ayr Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The property remains a crime scene with police and fire investigators expected to finalise the scene examination today.
Police visited the residence for a welfare check at approximately 2.15am, Tuesday, August 9 where all parties were spoken to by officers, will form part of the investigation.
Detectives are appealing to anyone who was in the area between 4am and 6am who may have information, CCTV or dashcam footage to contact police.
EARLIER
A deadly house fire at Ayr is being investigated.
Around 5.40am yesterday, emergency services were called the blaze on Home Hill Road.
A 47-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man were both taken to Ayr hospital in critical conditions and were later airlifted to Townsville University Hospital.
The 47-year-old woman has since died, while the 65-year-old man remains in a critical condition.
A man aged in his 20s was also transported to Ayr Hospital with smoke inhalation.
Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Lawson says police had attended the residence earlier that morning around 2.15am to conduct a welfare check.
“It was regarding a mental health matter,” he says.
“Police received a call in relation to some comments that were made at the residence so they attended, spoke to both residents and had QAS assisting them.”
Superintendent Lawson confirmed that police had been called to the residence in the past.
Investigations are ongoing and charges are yet to be laid.
