A man has been charged following an alleged assault on a taxi driver in Townsville.

The 22-year-old entered the cab on Flinders Street on March 26, but was asked to get out due to his behaviour.

He's accused of attempting to assault the driver before ripping out the EFTPOS machine causing damage.

A public appeal helped police track the man down.

Police have charged the Rasmussen man with one count each of both common assault and wilful damage.

He is expected to appear before the Townsville Magistrates Court on August 6.
