The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating a fatal helicopter crash near Hughenden.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority says it deployed a jet to search for a Robinson R22 helicopter after it failed to reach its destination yesterday.

The Challenger jet was tasked at around 7pm last night, but the search was called off at 2am today due to severe weather.

The search resumed later this morning, with six helicopters and additional fixed-wing aircraft.

The pilot, an 84-year-old man was found dead, while an aircraft wreckage was discovered in a creek bed, just off Pretty Plains Camden Park Road, west of Hughenden at 11.30am.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) says the R22 helicopter was conducting a positioning flight between two stations when it was reported missing.

A spokesperson says investigators will examine imagery of the wreckage and accident site and try to recover any relevant components for a more detailed examination.

The ATSB will publish a report when then investigation is complete.
