An additional ferry service to and from Palm Island has been added.

The new Wednesday service, operated by SeaLink, offers customers a return ferry from Townsville six days a week from Wednesday to Monday.

Member for Mundingburra Les Walker says it is a small change, that will make a big difference in the region.

“We are continually looking at ways to improve our offering for customers and, together with SeaLink, we have worked to give Palm Island residents greater choice to travel to and from the mainland," Mr Walker says.

“Customers will also be able to travel in comfort on the new purpose-built Coolgaree Cat that hit the water late last year.

“This $7million vessel was designed specifically to meet the challenges of transport on the Palm Island ferry route, and includes a number of features to improve safety, comfort and reliability."

Mr Walker says the new service "ticks all the boxes" in regards to the region's economic recovery.

"It's about jobs and creating other opportunities in marketing this region," Mr Walker says.

“Public transport is an important way to keep the economy moving and the government is committed to making sure it stays running while being safe."
