NQ set for a huge police boost

A $624,000,000 funding boost for Queensland Police will see nearly 1500 extra frontline officers deployed across Queensland under a State Government plan.

At least 150 positions will be located in the Northern Police Region which includes Townsville.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the government is committed to investing in the future of policing in the Sunshine State.

"There is over 100 now in the current academy, preparing to be a police officer, preparing to take that oath," he said.

"And with this historic investment, hundreds and hundreds more are in the pipeline to come online."

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll is welcoming the announcement.

"I've had these conversations now with the Minister for a number of months and I've got to say I'm extraordinarily pleased and grateful for the announcement," she said.

"It is the largest growth in a generation."
