Canavan Says We Had To 'Vote' To Force A Result For Adani

Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan has labelled this "an historic day for Queensland in generational terms, after Adani's Carmichael coal mine was given the go ahead in the Galilee Basin.

He said, "the last time a new coal basin was opened up in Queensland was in the 1960's and that led to huge developments in Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Townsville and the opening of the Galilee promises just as much generational opportunities for us all".

Mr Canavan said his understanding was that work would begin on Friday. He said Adani has been waiting for years for this in Queensland.

"Obviously they'll ramp up over time, by my understanding is the construction works that have been approved today [Thursday] will start tomorrow [Friday].

In terms of how long it took the Queensland Government to sign off on this project, he said there were environmental impacts to be considered with regard to threatened species and groundwater resources.

He said the "Federal Government has worked diligently through those, we've approved the finch plan and the groundwater plan months ago so it's not really clear why the Queensland Government took this much time to do the same thing but I'm just glad they got there".

"They say that good things come to those who wait, we've had to wait too long and we've had to do a bit more than wait, we've had to vote to force the Queensland Government to do this" he finished.
