North Qld Miners Rewarded With Discounted Freight
Miners in North Queensland will be awarded millions of dollars in discounts on freight charges.
Queensland Treasurer and Deputy Premier Jackie Trad has confirmed the $80 million scheme will be included in Tuesday's State Budget.
Speaking in Townsville on the weekend, Ms Trad said she is confident the plan will boost mineral exports from the state's northwest.
"What we are doing is we are alleviating the burden of those commercial rates on the rail users" she said.
Ms Trad added, "what that means, it is more efficient, it will lower the cost of getting bulk commodities from pit to Port and what that means is they can accelerate their investment faster".
Labor has also promised $30 million for construction of a new freight terminal at the Townsville Port, with another $18 million to come from the Port of Townsville.
