Townsville students now have the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Medical Radiation (Nuclear Medicine) without leaving North Queensland, thanks to a new partnership between Townsville Hospital and RMIT University.

The Nuclear Medicine Scientist Embedded Student Program combines online theory with hands-on experience at Townsville University Hospital, giving students practical skills in patient care and advanced imaging techniques.

RMIT student Nikisha Budhai says training locally has been invaluable.

“Being embedded in the hospital two days a week lets you hone your skills, so by the time you’re assessed, you’ve already had months of hands-on experience,” she said.

Townsville HHS nuclear medicine technologist Raelee McNabb, who graduated from RMIT in Melbourne, said the program opens the field to Queenslanders.

“You can learn a lot from books, but patient handling and real-life care has to be learned in person. Placement is where the real learning happens,” she said.

Applications for the 2026 intake are open now and close on 21 September 2025. For more information and to apply, visit the Queensland Health website.
