The construction 24 new social homes has begun in Rasmussen, in Townsville, with Yumba-Meta working with the Crisafulli Government to boost home ownership opportunities for indigenous communities.

The units will all be built to the Social Housing Design guidelines to meet accessibility needs -they’re expected to be completed later this year.

To continue to help vulnerable Queenslanders, Minister for Housing, Sam O’Connor, says the Crisafulli Government says they’ve committed to delivering 53,500 additional social and community homes by 2044 to ease the housing crisis.

“Our partnership with Yumba-Meta will deliver safe, secure and affordable homes for First Nations people who are disproportionally feeling the impacts of this housing crisis.

“While we deliver more supply, we’re also meeting with remote and discrete councils to explore new opportunities for First Nations families to own their own home,” Mr O’Connor says.

It comes as work continues to expand home ownership opportunities in Queensland’s Indigenous communities, starting on Palm Island.

Ten to thirty people could own their home for the first time on Palm Island following the rollout of a Home Ownership Scheme, allowing residents to purchase their Queensland Department of Housing owned social home, by entering into a rent-to-buy agreement with the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council.
