Queensland Health has launched an independent investigation into urology services at Townsville Hospital following reports that cancer patients missed critical follow-up care.
The Part 9 review comes after at least 11 patients experienced gaps in care dating back to 2022, with similar issues flagged in 2023 and 2024. Acting Chief Executive Rex O’Rourke has confirmed that no cancer diagnoses were missed, but the lapses prompted a closer look at clinical governance and hospital management, including how referrals were handled and followed up.
The investigation will examine whether proper procedures were in place and identify any failings, which will be made public. Patients affected are being contacted and provided with updated treatment plans, while Queensland Health continues to ensure the safety and quality of care.
More details will be released once the review is complete.
