With thousands expected to flock to beaches across Queensland this weekend surf lifesavers are reminding us to swim between the flags.
It comes as Surf Life Saving Queensland’s 2025 National Coastal Safety Report has shown the risk of drowning is 3.3 times higher on public holidays and long weekends.
Since July last year, there have been 16 coastal drownings across the state, all occurring outside the red and yellow flags.
Townsville locals are being urged to head to patrolled beaches this weekend like the Strand, Alma and Picnic Bay on Magnetic Island.
SLSQ General Manager of Public Safety and Emergency Management, Matt Thompson, is calling on the public to follow the advice of surf lifesavers and lifeguards.
“Drowning risk remains our top priority with 77% of rescues last week alone being undertaken outside of the flags and away from patrolled locations by our services.
“During last year’s Australia Day long weekend, a significant percentage of rescues across Queensland occurred outside the flagged areas, sometimes as little as 200 metres from a patrolled location.”
The long weekend traditionally sees an influx of locals and tourists enjoying Queensland’s beaches as the school holidays come to an end.
Parents and carers are reminded to always keep young children within arm’s reach while in the water.
Mr Thompson also encourages those celebrating along the coast with friends and family to remember that alcohol and swimming don’t mix.
“Our lifesavers and lifeguards do an incredible job protecting people along the coastline, but we need beachgoers to listen to their advice and heed the warnings, all while still enjoying time with family and friends.
“Our teams are on the beach early, setting up the flags away from rip currents, and they continuously monitor conditions and adjust as needed. We encourage everyone to check conditions, know their limits, and always swim at patrolled beaches.”
