Backpacker killer Ivan Milat reportedly won't return to his solitary confinement cell in Goulburn supermax prison, amid reports he is terminally ill.

Milat was driven to the Prince of Wales Hospital earlier this week where he had tests carried out, according to the ABC.

Tests were ordered after lumps were found in his stomach and throat.

The 74-year-old, who was convicted of killing seven backpackers in 1996, had reportedly been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

On Wednesday the ABC reported Milat had lost 20 kilograms over the past few months, quoting a source close to his family, who said he was suffering from geriatric anorexia and was "dangerously thin".

The broadcaster reports that it is believed that Milat will not return to Goulburn supermax, but will instead be transferred to a hospital ward at Long Bay Prison.

EARLIER | Infamous backpacker killer Ivan Milat has reportedly been transferred from his jail cell to a Sydney Hospital.

The 74-year-old is believed to have been shifted out of Goulburn Supermax prison for specialist medical treatment, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Corrective Services NSW told the publication that “a 74-year-old inmate was being treated in a Sydney hospital”.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Milat was transferred to a secure part of Prince of Wales Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The serial killer is serving seven consecutive life sentences for killing five backpackers from the UK and Germany and two Australians between 1989 and 1993.

Their bodies were dumped in the Belanglo State Forest, south west of Sydney.

Ivan's copycat nephew Matthew Milat was jailed for 30 years jail for killing a school friend in 2010.

The Judge at the time said that victim David Auchterlonie's final 10 minutes alive were filled with "horror" and "unimaginable torment".

Milat and Cohen Klein murdered David using a double bladed axe in the Belanglo State Forest in November 2010, the same location Uncle Ivan chose to murder seven backpackers in the 1990s.

The boys were aged 17 and 18 at the time of the murder of Auchterlonie.
