New Mortal Kombat to be shot in Adelaide

A new version of Mortal Kombat will be filmed in South Australia, creating 580 jobs and injecting $70 million into the state economy.

New Line Cinema has signed a deal to shoot the film on Adelaide Studios' sound stages using local talent and technical crews.

Visual effects and post-production work will also be completed in Adelaide.

"South Australia has a long and successful tradition of feature film making and Mortal Kombat will showcase our production skills to the world," Premier Steven Marshall said on Tuesday.

"Mortal Kombat will enhance the scope and reach of our production and post-production capabilities."

The film, based on the hugely popular video game franchise, will be produced by James Wan, who most recently worked on Aquaman, and directed by Australian Simon McQuoid.

Pre-production work will begin later this month will full production to get under way before the end of the year.
