A long‑vacant stretch of the Picnic Bay Esplanade is finally set for a revival, with Townsville City Council approving a major redevelopment for the site. The project will overhaul the existing Picnic Bay Hotel and deliver 127 new accommodation units, along with new hospitality spaces and shops, bringing fresh activity back to one of Magnetic Island’s most recognisable foreshore areas.
The redevelopment will roll out over several stages, starting with upgrades to the current bar and restaurant building, including a new first‑floor restaurant, function room and deck, plus 10 short‑term accommodation units.
Council says conditions have been added to protect the area’s character, including limits on building height, parking requirements, screening for neighbours and measures to safeguard the iconic fig trees.
