The countdown is officially on for the North Queensland Cowboys, with the club set to lock in its 22‑man squad this week for the historic Las Vegas season opener in just a fortnight.
Coach Todd Payten admits he’s been left with some difficult decisions after his side delivered a dominant performance against the Panthers in Friday night’s pre‑season hit‑out at Mackay’s BB Print Stadium. The strong showing has intensified competition for spots as the team prepares for its high‑profile trip to the US.
But one key selection may be taken out of Payten’s hands.
Centre Zac Laybutt is facing a two‑game suspension for a dangerous throw, putting his availability for Vegas in serious doubt. An early guilty plea would see him miss the Cowboys’ first two matches of the NRL season, while contesting the charge and losing could extend the ban to three games.
The Cowboys are expected to finalise their travel squad in the coming days as preparations ramp up for one of the biggest season launches in NRL history.
