Police actions investigated following fatal Strand shooting

Police actions over the weekend are being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command and Crime and Corruption Commission after a man was shot and killed in North Ward on Saturday morning.

Just before 10am, officers were called to McKinley Street where a man reportedly armed with a machete and knife advanced on them. He was shot in the chest and died despite immediate medical help.

Premier David Crisafulli has told Newscorp Townsville police officers involved in Saturday’s fatal shooting were using outdated tasers that failed to stop the armed man. He confirmed the new-generation Taser 10s weren’t yet rolled out in full, blaming years of under-resourcing.

The incident is under investigation, with calls now growing for a broader review of police-involved shootings.
